‘Incredible atmosphere’
Visiting the new Olympic Park in east London has been a major highlight for many ticket holders. Spectators Audrey and Sebastien from Toulouse in southern France said: ‘We’ve enjoyed every minute. Everything has been so well organised, there’s no waiting around or queues. There is always an incredible atmosphere on the Park, with people waving flags supporting their countries.’
Lis and Hemmime Sumdwell from Denmark spent three weeks in London. They’ve been fortunate to attend three Games before. So how does London compare? ‘There is a great atmosphere, the Park is compact, everything is so close,’ they say.
Athletes have also enjoyed the atmosphere on the Olympic Park. American 110m hurdler Jason Richardson says: ‘[My favourite memory will be] the nightly get-togethers outside the USA accommodation [in the Olympic Village]. We’ve spent a lot of time sitting on the stoop in the evenings bantering with each other and other athletes. It’s been great fun. We’ve even made up our own theme song!’
‘Amazing Games’
Outside venues, there have been some fantastic opportunities to enjoy the free road events in London and Surrey. More people have lined the streets to watch these events than at any previous Olympic Games.
Anna and Stephen Richards from Blackpool visited London for the first time with their children Lucy, 10 and Emily, 6. Anna said: ‘Being in the crowd during the women’s Marathon has been our highlight...we’ve never seen London before and enjoyed seeing the sights, including the Olympic Rings on Tower Bridge.’
London 2012 has also been the first Games to feature an Olympic women’s Boxing competition. Mavzuna Chorieva, who won bronze for Tajikstan in the Light category, said: ‘I am happy and so proud, not just to represent my country but also to represent women’s boxing. When I was little I had to pretend to be a boy to be able to compete. I cut my hair short and borrowed my brother’s driving licence. Now I can fight as me. That is what I will take from these amazing Games.’
